SCROLL DOWN

Welcome to Holoholo Lens

A collaborative art project/experiment, where I'm sending a camera from person to person to document what life is like where they are.

What is Holoholo lens?

Let's start with the name, in Hawaiian holoholo means to travel and well lens means lens, put them together and you have traveling lens. Which roughly is what this project is all about, Holoholo lens is a collaborative art project/experiment, where I'm sending a camera from person to person for a month(ish) to document what life is like where they are. The closest analogy would be something similar to flat stanley except with a camera (some people have pointed out it also sounds like sisterhood of the traveling pants).  After each person is done with the camera, I'll create an album/gallery of their time with the camera.

I haven't quite figured out all the details yet like exactly how long a person keeps the camera, or how the shipping from person to person goes, or what to eventually do with the website, but based on the concept of "just do something and work out the kinks as it happens" I'm launching the project. The first set of people I'm sending the camera to, are people from Hawaii who have moved out of Hawaii. Mainland for now, eventually I want to send the camera internationally. The current working title for this part of the project is "Offshore Aloha," more on that below.

Where did the idea for Holoholo lens come from?

Where did the idea for Holoholo lens come from?

I've been fascinated with the concept of things traveling without their owner, something similar to the traveling garden gnome in the movie Amelie for a while now. Then in early 2015, I lent my GoPro to a friend hiking thru Haleakala and it hit me, my GoPro had now done something I couldn't do. From there the idea of why don't I send the GoPro to different people turned into, why don't I send my other camera out since I wanted pictures and not so much videos.

Who are you?

Who are you?

My name is Ricky Li, I'm a Honolulu based photographer. I was born in Hong Kong, been in Hawaii for about 20 years, spent 2 years in Seattle, WA and well, I do stuff. Currently I'm back in Hawaii, a growth hacker at AdStreamz Inc. You might know me as @rickyli99 on twitter, instagram and various other social media networks.

Offshore Aloha

Offshore Aloha

Offshore Aloha, is the first part of this project. I'm sending the camera to former residents (kamaaina) of Hawaii who now live on the mainland. For offshore aloha, I have 3 "goals" in mind:

  1. No matter where a Hawaii person goes, they bring Hawaii with them.
  2. Things while different, are still sort of the same no matter where. e.g. kids still go to football practice, people still go to work in cubicles, etc.
  3. Be somewhat of a reference for other 808ers who are leaving Hawaii.

So the first person in this project is me, even though I'm now back in Hawaii. I'm retroactively participating with pictures from my time in Kirkland, WA.

I would love to send the camera internationally, and I've received a couple of requests, but international shipping is prohibitively expensive and items tend to go missing. It is on my to do list, so maybe day soon, the camera will pop up  somewhere other than the continental USA.
